Songs of Paapieye surveys a deliberate snapshot of SK’s hereditary Lobi repertoire heard through the lens of a stripped-down, and sometimes spare-sounding, solo gyil. The album focuses on a selection of SK’s favorite song cycles, funeral dirges, improvised interpretations on traditional songs and original compositions—and combinations thereof.

SK Kakraba “Songs of Paapieye” Long before Awesome Tapes From Africa, I was in Ghana as a student in where I met a lot of musicians. One musician SK Kakraba was around the university working a lot and his uncle was super famous for his gyil (wooden xylophone made of calabash gourds with spiderweb silk covers the holes for buzzing) mastery.

Awesome Tapes return to vinyl/cd waters with this visceral collection of beautiful solo-xylophone pieces from Ghanaian player SK Kakraba. A compendium of electrified traditional pieces and modes from the West African country, ATFA boss Brian Shimkovitz has known Kakraba for many years – since student times – and has managed to coax and play out a body of works which sounds vivid, fresh.

There are not a ton of recordings of gyil music out there, even with the never-ending flood of online streaming resources. Songs of Paapieye captures the richness of the traditional gyil repertoire, the sonic depth of the instrument, and the polyrhythmic complexity of Kakraba’s playing. In addition to the cassette format, the album is available as LP, CD and digital downloads.
